COVID-19 is quickly making its way around the world, affecting industry, education centres and world markets.  The stock market had its largest crash in history on Monday as countries go into a worldwide panic. Schools are closing, workers are being asked to work remotely, flights are being cancelled and in some countries, citizens are not being permitted to leave their homes except in an emergency. In Canada, it is expected that the coronavirus will impact approximately half of the population. We would be naïve to think that it will not come to Winnipeg; our firm intends to put forth some basic protocol now, in anticipation of what may come.  It is our understanding that the likelihood of becoming infected can be reduced by 50% if you exercise good hygiene.  Some direction on this from the CDC:

  • Cover your mouth NOT WITH YOUR HAND but rather cough or sneeze into your bent elbow;
  • Immediately dispose of any tissues you use, do not leave them in a pocket or on a surface
  • Frequently wash your hands.  Whether you sneeze, cough or not, take time each day to thoroughly wash your hands.
  • Remain a 2-3 feet distance away from others when possible.
  • Consider NOT shaking hands – sounds paranoid but this is the most likely way to spread corona and other infectious diseases.

If you have plans to travel in the next few months, be aware that airlines are offering full refunds and cancellations with no penalty to you.  Consider a staycation instead!

Stay warm, stay healthy and please wash your hands often.
